According to Jim Chalmers [7 May 2003] the signpost at Halley was made by Dave French in (he thinks) 1968, shortly after the IGY base was closed and during the first winter that the met dept was housed at the village [i.e. Halley-2]. Dave French comments that it is probably the only item to be moved from Halley II to each subsequent version and is now at Halley VI. It appears on the 1972 base photo. A better picture is Chris Johnson's, taken in 1979. It also featured on the Base Photos of 1987, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Other pictures were taken in 1994, 2001, 2002, and 2021. In 1982 the sign was refurbished and converted from miles to kilometres. Interestingly, the base photo for the "Black Gang" that wintered at Halley V in 1990, features a black signpost (with white lettering), topped by a penguin!10 Mar 2021
