In spite of the high fire hazard at Halley Bay, there have fortunately been few significant fires over the years, and none with serious consequences. In the middle of winter 1976, the old wooden VLF hut (which had been the ozone hut prior to 1971) suffered a total loss by fire, due to a design fault and poor electrical wiring. A new hut (the "clockwork orange") and replacement VLF receivers were sent in the following season. See also the balloon shed fire of 1981 and the IH fire of 1987.
