Place names in the Eastern Shackleton Range

by Peter Noble

I was just browsing Zfids website and noticed for the first time the Article ‘Place Names’ submitted by Les Wittamore. I was a little disappointed to note that none of the names allocated to the Eastern Shacks that carried the names of the Halley team members that discovered that area in 1968 have been included but they are in the international gazetteer. However, the gazetteer itself is in error and I have been trying for several years to get it amended with little success.

Nobleknausane: Group of small nunataks in the E-most part of Shackletonkjeda, SW-most in Dronning Maud Land.
After Peter Noble, Leader of the British Antarctic Survey's traverse of Shackletonkjeda Nov. 1968 - Jan. 1969.

Gallsworthyryggen: Small nunatak in the E-most part of Shackletonkjeda, SW-most in Dronning Maud Land.
After John Gallsworthy, member of the British Antarctic Survey’s traverse of Shackletonkjeda Nov. 1968 - Jan. 1969.

Carterknattane: Small nunatak in the E-most part of Shackletonkjeda, SW-most in Dronning Maud Land.
After John Carter, member of the British Antarctic Survey’s traverse of Shackletonkjeda Nov. 1968 - Jan. 1969.

Rileyryggen: small nunatak in the E-most part of Shackletonkjeda, SW-most in Dronning Maud Land.
After Norris Riley, member of the British Antarctic Survey’s traverse of Shackletonkjeda Nov. 1968 - Jan. 1969.

The wording is as in the Norwegian gazetteer but it hasn’t yet been transferred to the International one that is hosted by Australia.
